Chad,
MTV has created a video outlet called "URGE".
Microsoft and MTV have enter=
ed=20
into an agreement whereby MTV will produce video clips that
can ONLY be=20
viewed with Windows Media Player 11. WMP11 will be the
VISTA media player,=
=20
but Microsoft has "ported" a version which will
run on XP.  I downloaded=20
WMP11 and tried it out, but removed it and replaced it with
WMP10 after a=20
couple hours. I do not know if removing WMP11 will remove
that DRM that=20
comes with it. Microsoft is sneaky about things like that.
Remember a=20
couple of years ago when a WMP '"security
patch" changed the EULA on the WM=
P,=20
giving Microsoft and its partners the "right" to
add or remove any software=
=20
THEY deemed necessary for the security of YOUR PC? Ya,
right.

 But, if I find out DRM is not removed I'll pass that info
on.

To make matters worse, WMP11 will be the only way a VISTA
user, or a Window=
s=20
user who has replaced previous versions of WMP with version
11, can burn CD=
s,=20
be it for backups or what ever. . . IF WMP11 will allow it.
 The DRM=20
technology will determine what you will be allowed to watch,
and what you=20
will be allowed to store on a your HD, AND what you will be
allowed to back=
up=20
to a CD. You will have lost control of your PC to Microsoft
and=20
its "partners", like MTV.

Already Microsoft media sycophants are publishing
"news" stories and postin=
g=20
blog and talkback entries extolling the virtues of WMP11 and
encouraging=20
everyone to download and install it. . . . just like dope
pushers pushing t=
he=20
first "hit" for free. That activity also floods
the market with a ton=20
of "positive" reviews and info, making critical
or thoughtful discussions=20
harder to find, which is the reason for the sycophants.
That and trying to=
=20
capture mindshare away  from iTunes.=20

Wikipedia describes it pretty well:
htt
p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media_Player
"In addition to being a media player, Windows Media
Player includes the=20
ability to rip music from, and copy music to compact discs,
synchronize=20
content with a digital audio player (MP3 player) or other
mobile devices, a=
nd=20
let users purchase or rent music from a number of online
music stores."

Then, there's this:
Ouch! Bitten by DRM
http://www.edbott.com/mediacenter/archives/ouch-bi
tten-by-drm/
" The Microsoft Windows Media Digital Rights
Management (DRM) system may=
=20
not work if you make changes to your computer hardware. You
may not be able=
=20
to play protected content. Protected content includes
content such as songs=
=20
that you have bought and downloaded from an online store.

    You may receive the following error messages:

        * The license to play the packaged media is invalid.
        * C00D277F - Secure storage protection error.
Restore your licenses=
=20
from a previous backup and try again.

    This issue occurs because the Windows Media DRM system
maintains=20
information based on the hardware configuration of the
computer. If certain=
=20
components are changed, Windows Media DRM may not work
because it may view=
=20
the change as an unauthorized attempt to move protected
content to another=
=20
computer.

    This issue may occur if you have made one or more of the
following chan=
ges=20
to your computer hardware:

        * You recently changed hardware components, such as
the CPU or the=
=20
motherboard.
        * You modified any one of your computer=E2=80=99s
Basic Input/Outpu=
t System=20
(BIOS) settings that affect hardware components, such as
disabling CPU=20
hyper-threading.
        * You moved the hard disk drive from one computer to
another comput=
er.

Well, that=E2=80=99s not the error I=E2=80=99m getting, but
the underlying =
issue sounds=20
familiar, especially given that I upgraded the hard drive on
this machine=20
last fall and used a disk imaging program to copy the
contents of the old=20
disk to the new one."

DRM Crippled CD: A bizarre tale in 4 parts
http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/2005/1
0/drm_crippled_cd.html
" . . . It turns out that all Engadget (quoting
Variety) notes that this DR=
M=20
is not at all about making the CD immune to piracy. Instead,
its part of a=
=20
pissing contest between Sony and Apple: Variety writes that
'the new copy=
=20
protection scheme =E2=80=94 which makes it difficult to rip
CDs and listen =
to them=20
with an iPod =E2=80=94 is designed to put pressure on Apple
to open the iPo=
d to other=20
music services, rather than making it dependent on the
iTunes Music Store f=
or=20
downloads.'

You mean to tell me that this isn't even about P2P and
unauthorized=20
downloading? How annoying is that? Sony has their panties in
a bunch cause=
=20
Apple has been kicking their arses all over the innovation
and digital musi=
c=20
schoolyard? So the mature response from a major global
conmsumer electronic=
s=20
corporation is to take their ball and go home?

DRM is now being used as a competitive economic weapon --
not as an=20
anti-piracy tool.

As a music consumer, I find this ridiculous. Why I cannot
use a legally=20
purchased CD -- because Sony is miffed at Apple for creating
the 2000's=20
version of their Walkman -- is beyond absurd. I am very,
very annoyed at=20
this.=20

In fact, I am so perturbed at this act of wanton stupidity,
that two immine=
nt=20
purchases -- a Sony Bravia LCD big screen TV and the Sony
Vaio notebook --=
=20
are now put on hold.

So far, Sony's lost business with me is now one CD
($10.99), one flat panel=
 TV=20
($3,499) and one laptop ($3,199). That's lost sales of
approximately $6,71=
0.=20
If you are a Sony shareholder, you should be as annoyed as I
am. "

Personally, Chad, I rarely use the Windows side of my laptop
and never for=
=20
viewing videos, surfing, emailing or doing stuff I don't
want to have to do=
=20
again because XP crashed, or corrupted the file, or what
ever.  Add to that=
=20
now, "what ever Microsoft won't let me do".
That last one is reason enoug=
h=20
to make Linux your platform of choice.
