What applications do you want to run?
In the case of Debian, packages.debian.org will tell you the
installed
size of each package. This won't include dependencies,
however. Maybe
the unslung package database has similar statistics.
My main slug has a 1G flash drive as its root filesystem
which is
currently 54% full. It is running an NFS server, CUPS print
server,
PostgreSQL database server, thttpd web server, assorted junk
of my own
creation, and loads of odd utility packages.
There can be some complications if you try to install Debian
on a
too-small flash device (at least in some releases of the
installer),
e.g. its auto-partitioning algorithm makes the wrong choice.
It's not
insurmountable, but could be confusing if you don't know how
to
partition/format manually. Flash sticks are constantly
getting
cheaper, so I would suggest not buying anything less than
2G. I would
suggest looking for one that says "high speed",
and as a clue the ones
that are physically larger tend to be faster in my
experience, perhaps
because they have multiple chips that are read in parallel.
Phil.
