Hello all, I am a newbie in the wireless lan field, so I first apologise if you think my question is very basic/stupid. I am currently working on implementation of a handoff algorithm to support VoIP in wireless LANs. Typically the complete handoff process takes time from 300 ms to several seconds depending on the vendors of NIC and the AP. Obviously, VoIP flows cannot tolerate this much delay. Hence modification to current handoff algorithm is necessary. Now the first thing I want to know is where is the handoff algorithm located? I mean is it in the card firmware? or is it in the device driver of the card? It would be very helpful, if somebody can clearly tell what functions actually firmware and device drivers do? Also please provide some useful
links if you know any. Having said this, I would like to ask, if it is possible to change the handoff algorithm code in proprietary NICs? I mean has anybody tried this out before? or is there any open-source code available which can be used for modifying the handoff algorithm? Please give your valuable comments on this. Many thanks in advance.
Thanks and Regards, Anand.
