Hello.
My wireless USB network adapter (Dell TrueMobile 1180,
413c:8100) is a
802.11b compatible product. Currently in our office we use a
wireless
gateway. The gateway can be configured with a web interface
and it has
two modes: 802.11g mode and 802.11b mode. Currently it is on
802.11g mode.
I tried to follow this guide on wireless setup:
htt
p://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Prism2_USB_on_Gentoo
And end up cannot obtain IP address. I think it maybe
because I use a
802.11b device trying to connect to 802.11g network. Does
802.11g
network allows 802.11b device to join? If I switch my
gateway to 802.11b
mode, I am afraid I would have slowed everyone else down.
Here is how I tried to connect (I have configured wlan.conf
and
wlancfg-HBF to use WEP/opensystem and 10-digit Hex key, the
authentication method and key are the same as everyone else
in the office)
root esmeralda:/etc/conf.d# wlanctl-ng wlan0
lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable
message=lnxreq_ifstate
ifstate=enable
resultcode=success
root esmeralda:/etc/conf.d# wlanctl-ng wlan0

P.S. If linux-wlan has a tool that I can use to scan
available networks
to join, then I think I should be able to tell if it's not
possible for
me to join 802.11g network by myself.

I dont see you issuing the commands to set the WEP key - so
it looks
like you are attempting to join without setting the
authentication.

Dear Karl Relton (and everyone)
Thank you for your help! In fact I think I am too stupid to
fight the
authentication stuff so I take it to the home wireless
network, SSID is
"netgear" and is completely not encrypted. I can
directly connect to
this network without a password by using both SuSE Linux and
Windows (on
a notebook with built-in wireless support) through a
graphical user
interface. The signal quality is good because I am sitting
only 5 meters
away from the AP.
Now back to test the USB wireless adapter. I tried to use
the simplest
configuration, that is, only change on line in wlan.conf
(a.k.a. make
SSID_wlan0="HBF"), and copy wlancfg-DEFAULT
directly to wlancfg-netgear.
I also made sure the device is properly detected:
zhangweiwu esmeralda:/etc/wlan$ sudo lsusb
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 413c:8100 Dell Computer Corp.
TrueMobile 1180
802.11b Adapter
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
and the module was properly loaded
zhangweiwu esmeralda:/etc/wlan$ sudo lsmod
Module Size Used by

snd_mixer_oss 20960 1 snd_pcm_oss
prism2_usb 79404 0
p80211 33488 1 prism2_usb
(note the prism2_usb module was loaded automatically after I
plugin the
device)
Then I join the network through the most standard way:
zhangweiwu esmeralda:/etc/wlan$ sudo /etc/init.d/wlan start

If your SSID_wlan0="HBF" then your config file
should be called
wlancfg-HBF.

try running iwlist to see if the card has found any
networks.
Getting these cards setup the first time can be a bit
tricky, so don't
panic.
It does work with udev & NetworkManager if you prefer a
GUI to set
things up. You'll have to check your distro to see if
NetworkManager is
installed & enabled.
HTH
Cheers

Thank you for correcting this. In fact, what I did is right,
what I
wrote is wrong.
I made SSID_wlan0="netgear".

wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
(I thought I got this result because linux-wlan-ng doesn't
support
Wireless Extensions)

Is it? Then I'll certainly give it a try. Thanks very much
for your help.
