Aha!  The vital clue!

I get "No such file or directory", but the other
file in that directory
claims version 0.2.0, not 0.2.3.  I went back to the 0.2.3
sources and
did make install again just to be sure, but I still get the
0.2.0 module.

I decided that the install must be declining to write over
an existing
file somewhere, so I did a find in the kernel modules and
discovered
I had TWO files named p80211.o and TWO files named
prism2_cs.o -- not
a good sign.  I deleted all of them, and did make install
again, and
now "iwlist wlan0 scan" works.

That's a pretty weird problem to have, but I'm glad to have
found it
and fixed it.  Thank you for your help.
