Hello. Recently we had discussion on the mp3 players.

Samsung YP-U2RZB player (70 euros) supports formats mp3,
wma,
ogg, wav, asf. The ogg must be the ogg vorbis etc format.

What will happen if the player is plugged to Linux
computer?
Could I just copy the ogg files to player's disk
("cp *.ogg /mnt/player/") and all would work
perfectly?

Hello,

I purchased an iRiver T30, and found that it came boasting
MTP
compatibility. This is a protocol between device and
computer which
supports media of various kinds, but not though the USB mass
storage
interface. I found (very weak) support for it through
gphoto2, but
finally abandoned it as useless. If your device uses MTP,
life will be
difficult. If it brags UMS support, then it will likely
mount as a
normal USB-based removable file system.

That works for me, but I have a different player. Check out
what's on
the device, first -- there might be a pre-existing directory
structure
on the player with designated folders called
"music" or "audio" or
suchlike.

I have three of the Samsung YP-mumbles. They are the 512Mb
ones from a few years ago, and I got them for christmas
presents last year (or the year before, I forget). They
work exactly like this. They look like disk drives, like
usb memory sticks. There may be some restrictions as far
as how deeply you can nest folders, but for what I did
just copying .ogg files plays fine. .mp3 files work as
well, as you would imagine.

I own exactly that device, since around four months, and i
am quite happy with
it, except the sound being a bit too bassy for my taste. It
can also act as
ordinary usb stick.

It automounts as mass storage media and uses these
directories:
"Music" (for your files), "system" (for
generated playlists, settings and so
on, and "voice" for voice records from the builtin
mic.

One weird thing: i have one .ogg file on the player, it is
one of the great
songs by Dave Phillips found on http://linux
-sound.org/ardour-music.html,
that causes the player to stop and freeze/power down, then
the only way to
wake it up is to reset it or to connect it to the
computer...

Is it perhaps using the same chip/firmware as the iRiver IFP
players?
Those can only handle Vorbis files within a certain bitrate
range - I
have to encode files specially for the player with a minimum
and maximum
bitrate.

Not sure, a quick google search gave me a data sheet without
info on the used
chip, but could that really be the case? it plays the song
till the end and
_then_ freezes... without powering down btw, i was wrong
about that.
