QWERTY to midi?

hello list,

I would like to trigger samples with a qwerty keyboard. I
am aware
that freewheelin will allow loops to be turned off/on with a
qwerty
keyboard, but I am looking for more one-shot sample
triggering. It
would be nice to be able to assign multiple samples (whether
loops,
one-shot, etc.) to different keys and be able to trigger
them by
pressing the key. Is this possible? If so, what
applications can be
used to do it?

vkeybd might be what you want to use... it allows you to map
your
computer keyboard to a virtual MIDI keyboard and control an
AWE32, OSS
or ALSA based sequencer.

FreeWheeling is tailor-made for this

Some sort of virtual keyboard (vkeybd is the only one that
comes to
mind) will do the trick.
With this and JACK (via qjackctl) you could connect your
virtual MIDI
keyboard to Hydrogen for any one-shot samples, which you can
load in
to a custom 'drummachine'. The loops can be toggled with
Freewheeling
directly (it would have to have focus to receive the
keystrokes,
unless you use the MIDI vkeybd); you might have to hack the
.fweelin.rc file to disable the keys you want to use for
your
one-shots, though.

This is really easy to do in Pd. In workshops I explain this
on day
one usually. Attached is a simple example patch how to
trigger one
sample with a configurable key. Just open it several times
if you need
more samples/keys, then you need to learn the keys for each
one
sperately. The patch can of course be improved in several
ways, e.g.
by using a better sample player like my [play-samp~] or
[samp10~]
from the RTC-library for Pd.

Ciao

Another option Josh, is vkeybd. Viz:

That is the defintion of 'keyboard focus' ... when you have
it,
you receive key events, otherwise not.

X11 apps are not supposed to bypass this, except by
'grabbing',
the keyboard but that may interfere with correct operation
of
other applications that require key events. Some specific
key
combinations reserved by the window manager may still work,
but
you wouldn't be able to type text in any other window.
Vkeybd would then require a 'release keyboard' button or
some
such.

The way keyboard focus is given to a window may depend on
your window manager's settings. Most will have an option
not
to interfere with the focus, and in that case it will stay
with the current owner until it is explicitly requested by
another window. This solves the problem in many cases.
But if any other app takes the keyboad focus when the mouse
pointer is over any of its windows there is little you can
do
about that. Wwell behaved apps should of course not do
this.

How else would it work? Would you want your keystrokes
interpreted as
MIDI messages if you had to move to another application?

I know, this is the way it's supposed to work. Simply, it's
a pity
that a computer keyboard can't be used as a MIDI one, to
send notes or
control changes.
