Hi all,

With AC3's recent release it's time to upgrade my PC164LX
system, the good old Matrox Millenium is very sluggish under
Gnome and I'm shopping for a replacement. I was looking at a
64MB ATI Radeon 7000 PCI from Sapphire, you can get them for
about 30€ on eBay. My question is quite obvious: do these
cards work on 164LX systems?

Thanks
Steven

I've used one of those in my DS10 running Red Hat 7.2
through to
Alpha Core 2, with a side trip into CentOS, and it's been
great and
well supported. I even believe 3D acceleration is now
working again
in Alpha Core for the first time since 0.9.

I'm _almost certain_ I dropped my Radeon into my 164LX board
at least
once while testing things ages ago, and had no issues there
either,
but you may want to wait to hear from someone who knows for
sure. I
think you'll be fine though.

Funny thing is, that since I killed it (while experimenting
with re-
flashing the ROM) I've gone back to using a Matrox
Millenium. I know
what you mean about sluggish. I really
much grab another Radeon soon.

I have Radeon 7500 happily running in my PWS.

Currently, all Radeons I've tested EXCEPT the original
R100/7200
appear to work just fine under AC3 (the problem and fix with
R100/7200
is known, but not in our code base); and they all are
capable of
running 3D apps, though "compiz" is a bit of a
stretch, still... ;-}

Those that have been successful for me are:

	RV100 aka 7000/VE
	RV200 aka 7500
	R200 aka 9100
	RV280 aka 9250

Most have 64MB of memory; although the 9250 has 256, I've
not noticed
any benefit so far... :-

Some are 64-bit memory bus (7000 and some 7500s), the others
are
128-bit bus, and thus have the capability of better
performance.

A while ago, the 7000 support was a bit unstable on Alpha,
but the
current support seems pretty solid.

Note for those with Alphas that have working AGP support,
the R300
based 9700/FireGL X1 appear to be supported by the same ATI
driver
code base we are using (xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.6.3-1, for FC6);
I'm going
to try putting one in an AGP-capable ES45 and see what
happens...

Good luck.

Hi,

I don't need 3D performance, just an usable GUI (the Matrox
cards are
horrible). So I ordered a Radeon 7000...more testings and
news next

I'm happy to hear the Radeon cards work. I've only had one
very old
Chinese made mach64 work in an alpha.. every other ATI I
tried was a
no-go, even some of the newer mach64s.

Of course there has been some wierdness of late with the
S3. I don't know
why support has failed in recent years, seeing as S3 are
stock on server
3300s.

Diamond FireGL cards have been a source of bad luck.
Neither the 1000 or
the 3000 seems to work well for me. The 3000 seems to give
me a console
lock when i use anything linked against GTK, and artifacts
very badly.
the 1000? that's *really* bad. X starts.. and then i've got
a console
lock. Haven't tried the matrox, but I understand they work.
Ark logic
cards seemed to work for me (until it cooked the expansion
memory)

There are quite a few I haven't tried. It seems almost
every PCI card I
get ends up being either an S3, or an ATI.

Dear heviarti & list:

I have had mixed results with the Diamond Fire 1000, it
*looks* like an
ELsa Gloria and has a Permedia 2 chip, but sometimes it just
doesn't
work. Like with the AC 3 graphic installer.

I still like the 3Dlabs Oxygen VX1. It is a 32M card, but
has much
better picture quality than the Radeon. And it seems more
compatible
with graphic install.

good luck
