If the plan is to merge with Fedora at some point it might
make sense to keep
the "alpha" part for the architecture.

If (and that's a _big_ if) that happens, the version number
will also  
jump up by at least 4 steps, and I think we can deal with
rewriting  
the config files to fix the paths between releases.
