If you have one, there should be /dev/dsp0 and a symlink
/dev/dsp to first
one.

/dev/dsp should be fine in any case.
But: maybee your soundcard is not supported, or
misconfigured. Try to play
some clip using
alsaplayer -d /dev/dsp some_audio_file
