How-To: Run your own network wiring (Misc)

08.22.2006 06:58 PM PT | Matt Hartley | Comment | Send to Friends | Discuss

OK, many of us don’t likely see a benefit in wiring our homes for networking. But there are those who need to do this for businesses.

Wherever you call home, it probably didn’;t come wired up for that most precious of home utilities: internet access. Sometimes wireless networking can only take you so far. Guerrilla network wiring might sound a little strong, but sometimes it ends up feeling like an episode of MacGyver, without the bombs. (Unless you count flaming laptops.) In today̵7;s How-To, we’ll show you how to make your own cables and teach you a few tricks for getting them where you need ‘em most around the house.

The supplies for making network cable are simple. We’ll need:

* RJ-45 connectors * RJ-45 crimping tool * Category 5 cable (Our 1000 foot spool is seven years old) * Wire strippers

These used to be pretty esoteric, but these days you can get crimpers and connectors at most computer stores. (The cable is usually cheaper at the hardware store.)230;. Source: Engadget

Tom's Interactive CPU Charts Get Core 2 And AM2 Processors (Misc)

08.22.2006 06:55 PM PT | Matt Hartley | Comment | Send to Friends | Discuss

Even considering the older CPU charts from Tom’s Hardware, it remains difficult to stay up to date with the latest and greatest.

The last CPU Charts update was only four months ago, but the processor landscape has changed dramatically. AMD used to be the dominant power, but Intel̵7;s Core 2 Duo launch turned everything upside down. Not only are Core 2 Duo processors faster than the current Athlon 64 X2 lineup, but they also consume less power. Core 2 is a Cure to old Pentium pains.

However, selecting the right processor has not become any easier. There are still lots of different product lines and model numbers on the market, and the simple fact that Intel outperforms AMD in both performance and performance per Watt categories does not mean that a Core 2 Duo is your best pick by default. Don’t forget that superior products come at a price̷0;. Source: TH

Nvidia disputes Dell XPS 700 customer assertions of inaccurate parts list (Review)

08.22.2006 06:49 PM PT | Matt Hartley | Comment | Send to Friends | Discuss

Boy, Dell is just having issues all over the place! Now Nvidia is pointing fingers at Dell for cripes sake…;

Santa Clara (CA) - This afternoon, senior Nvidia spokesperson Bryan Del Rizzo disputed the likelihood of reports emerging from Dell that the first Pentium D 900-series-based XPS 700 units being shipped do not contain NvidiaR17;s top-of-the-line nForce 590 chipset as advertised, but instead a solution reached in Dell217;s own laboratories. “Based on my understanding,R21; Del Rizzo told TG Daily this afternoon, “they are in fact using the Nvidia nForce 590 SLI MCP.”;

In recent weeks, according to customers awaiting shipments of their XPS 700 systems posting on Dell’;s user community forums, Dell customer service representatives have responded by e-mail saying that XPS 700 shipment delays were caused by a need to create an interim chipset solution for Dell’;s custom motherboard. One response cited on the forum - whose authenticity could not be positively verified - reads in part, “The XPS 700 will not have any of those capabilities because the chipset will not be a nforce 590 chip. It is a chip that is being built especially for us. It will be similar to the nforce 4 SLI chipset, but it will be a slimmed down version of that.”…;. Source: TG Daily

Pimp Your Home Theater PC (Misc)

08.22.2006 06:40 PM PT | Matt Hartley | Comment | Send to Friends | Discuss

Think your machine is pimped out enough? After taking a look at the following piece, you may feel differently…

We recently reviewed a pair of HTPC cases from nMedia Systems that offered a lot of value but lacked the aesthetic and visceral characteristics that appeal to videophiles, home entertainment buffs, and system builders willing to pay a bit more for the finer details. Along with good looks, efficient cooling, and noise insulation, there are a number of design elements that distinguish a good chassis from a great one. Today, we’ll be looking at a pair of casesβ€”the Ahanix MCE701 and the Antec Fusionβ€”to see whether they’re fit to house your HTPC…;. Source: extremetech.com
