Can you wrap your mind around this? A 2.5 TB hard drive
sitting there in your desktop. Wow, just imagine the Windows patches
that you could fill that puppy with! Scotts Valley
(CA) - Seagate today provided an updated outlook on the future of the
hard drive. The company nearly tripled today̵7;s highest storage
density and believes that 275 GB capacities will be realistic for
future Ipods, while desktop computers will be able to store up to 2.5
TB on one drive. Hard drives, for the most part of their
existence, were very well ahead of actually storage needs. It was not
until recently that hard drives began to fall behind and concerns if
current drives were actually capable to hold HD media content on the
very high end and if small form-factor hard drives could offer the
storage space necessary to differentiate themselves from the
accelerating growth of flash memory chips̷0;. Source: TG Daily

This sounds need on the surface, but it society really needing
more of that “RFID goodness8221;? I tend to lean with
no. DNP, Tana-X, and SEARS codeveloped a smart shelf
that can monitor detailed consumer behaviors. The shelf monitors
RFID-tagged sales items on the shelf and collects information such as:
- how many people stopped in front of a sales item - how many people
did not stop in front of a sales item - how many times / how long a
sales item was picked up by a customer - how much time was spent by a
consumer before coming to a decision whether or not to buy it
It̵7;s stored on a PC and analyzed by dedicated software. 5-inch
digital POP terminals are monted on the shelf and display product
relevant information…. Source: RFID Japan [Continued]

Alright, now tell me that this is not just super cool! A chip
that can transfer laser light has my vote for super-cool design of the
year. SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 17 — Researchers plan
to announce on Monday that they have created a silicon-based chip that
can produce laser beams. The advance will make it possible to use
laser light rather than wires to send data between chips, removing the
most significant bottleneck in computer design. As a
result, chip makers may be able to put the high-speed data
communications industry on the same curve of increased processing
speed and diminishing costs — the phenomenon known as Moore’s law
— that has driven the computer industry for the last four decades.
The development is a result of research at Intel, the world’s
largest chip maker, and the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Commercializing the new technology may not happen before the end of
the decade, but the prospect of being able to place hundreds or
thousands of data-carrying light beams on standard industry chips is
certain to shake up both the communications and computer
industries8230;. Source: NYT [Continued]

Looking for a good solid state hard drive? Then the option
below might be just the ticket for you. Take a look below. Oh and
itR17;s a Flash drive to boot. TDK has followed
Samsung and launched a hard drive replacement based on NAND Flash
memory. The product, which is currently available in sample
quantities, was announced by the company last week. The 32GB unit
hooks up to the host across a standard IDE connector, but it’s
about 80 per cent of the size of a standard 2.5in notebook drive - the
part8217;s an obvious choice for battery powered systems since it
consumes less power than a standard HDD. The unit’;s controller
supports data transfer rates of up to 33.3MBps, the manufacturer
saidR30;. Source: RegHardware [Continued]
