Information Wow, can I get fries with that CPU?
Seriously, what a creative way to mix some greasy fun with
computing! This hardware hacker was experimenting with liquid
cooling for an old motherboard, immersing it in oil in a tin pan. Once
that worked, he decided to heat the oil up and make french-fries in
it, while playing Quake on the PC that was being slowly deep-fried
along with the chips. It worked for a while, then the machine had to
be rebooted (and it continued to work after that!)R30;. Source: BoingBoing

Information Guess whether we like it or not,
we217;re going mobile with our computing. And from the looks of
things, it is done deal. The world̵7;s largest contract
laptop PC maker is branching out into ultramobile PCs (UMPCs), using a
reference design from Intel and Internet software from Yahoo.
Intel executives showed off the UMPC made by Quanta Computer at the
Fall Intel Developer Forum in Taipei on Monday. The new device is a
sign Intel and other backers of the UMPC design are gaining further
support from hardware makers globally, which will increase the variety
of devices available as well as their functions. More UMPC contenders
should also help drive down prices through market competition.
The ultramobile PC is QuantaR17;s first. It will be the second
Taiwanese company to enter the market, following the launch of
Asustek Computer8217;s R2HÂ last month̷0;. Source: InfoWorld

Information I simply can’t get myself all that
excited about yet another Skype add-on product. Still, if it was a
little more open ended, it might be cool. At the
recent VON show, I dropped by Polycom217;s booth to check out its
“;HD Voice̶1; wideband audio technology demo. I used many a
POTS Polycom speakerphone in my former corporate life and always have
been impressed with the products. They are uniquely styled, solidly
built and a big improvement over the old Western Electric
“squawk boxes̶1;. So when I spied the Communicator, I asked
for a short demo and then for a review unit, which Polycom quickly
sent…. Source: Tom’s Networking

Information I think the real question is whether or
not Nintendo really can pull off the expected revenue with their new
Wii console. Even without the launch of the Wii, Nintendo
will have a good shot at becoming the most successful video game
hardware company this year. The manufacturer today said that it
expects global sales of the portable DS console to come in at 20
million units, about three million units more than in 2005. Nintendo
claims that nearly all of the growth in the U.S. market can be
attributed to the DS - with overall 2006 growth so far being estimated
at 11% with the DS and only 1.6% without DS hardware and software. Nintendo believes that about 82 million DS games will be sold in
2006, a 9% gain over the 75 million games sold in 2005. “Numbers
dramatically show the value of reaching out to the masses with
products that are compelling and comfortable,” says Nintendo of
America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “And this perfectly sets the
stage for our breakthrough Wii console, which appeals to both core
players and current non-players with an intuitive control system and a
price everyone can afford.221; Source: TG Daily

Information Well, to all those who believe that all
drives are created equal – it appears this conclusion was not
completely accurate. Normally, users of external hard
drives are faced with a limited set of choices. Some products offer
dual interfaces, typically FireWire 400 and USB 2.0. Some drives, like
Seagate’s 300GB eSATA external drive, give you the speed of a
3Gbps SATA connection, but you need an eSATA port on any system you
want to use it with. Other World Computing (OWC) is a
reseller mainly focused on the Apple Macintosh peripheral market, but
the external drive works with both Mac OS, Windows, and (with the
right drivers) Linux. You can buy a fully configured drive direct from
OWC in capacities ranging from 250GB to 750GB. Or you can just buy the
enclosure and add your own drive. We tested a 320GB version that OWC
sells for $230…;. Source: ExtremeTech

Information With any luck, this will work to benefit
Sony as they sure could use some success in the Blueray world right
now. Sony has announced that Click, Talladega Nights:Â
The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Black Hawk Down will be the first Sony
films released on 50GB dual-layer Blu-ray disc. Although Blu-ray discs
have been available on the market for several months now, these are
50GB dual-layer discs as opposed to the current discs being only 25GB.
Pricing for the Sony films has not been publicly released.
Click will feature all bonus features in high-definition, along
with four deleted scenes and a documentary on the special effects used
in the film…;. Source: DailyTech

Information So just how worthwhile is the power
consumption for Intel Core 2 Chipset? That answer might just surprise
you… Since the introduction of Intel̵7;s 90nm
Prescott core, power consumption has been at the forefront of any CPU
related discussion. But as both AMD and Intel strive towards
introducing more power efficient cores we must turn our attention
elsewhere to find new areas where power savings are necessary. The GPU
is next on the chopping block for power consumption, but we’ve
still got a little time before both ATI and NVIDIA unveil their new
high DirectX 10 parts fully equipped with very high power consumption.
While we wait for the next-generation of powerful GPUs and quad-core
CPUs to debut, we decided to take a look at the power consumption of
an often overlooked component in the system: the chipset.
Dutifully playing its role as traffic cop in any modern system, the
chipset has to deal with getting data from each and every high speed,
high powered component in the system and directing it to the right
place. Thankfully the amount of logic in a chipset is nothing near
that of a CPU, but given its role in a high performance system, the
chipset can easily be a notable consumer of power. The question is -
are some chipsets better than others for power consumption…. Source: anandtech.com

Information OK, I’ll confess. This is one
network appliance that I would not mind owning. “The
Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link is really four devices in
one box. First, there̵7;s the Wireless Access Point, which lets
you connect to the network without wires. There̵7;s also a
built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100/1000 Switch to connect your
wired-Ethernet devices together at up to gigabit speeds. The Router
function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a
high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. We’ve also
included a Storage Link that lets you easily add gigabytes of storage
space onto your network using readily available USB 2.0 hard drives
212; or plug in a USB flash disk for a convenient way to access
your portable data files. The built-in Media Server streams music,
video, and photos from the attached storage device to any UPnP
compatible media adapter. And you can get to your files from anywhere
in the world through the Internet8230;. Source: Linksys

Information I would be first to admit that mobile
devices have made some amazing transformations over the years. This
piece below definitely illustrates this well. Check out our
slideshow that includes a tribute to the Psion 5mx, a discussion of
the modern version of the 5mx we’re designing and a request for
your help in finalizing the design. After viewing the slideshow, to
help with our design of the ultrasmall Psion 20xx fantasy computer,
