No, wait. The first post was on 

[roothls677 tmp]# cat /etc/redhat-release 
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 4)
[roothls677 tmp]# uname -a
Linux hls677.seml.astrazeneca.net 2.6.9-42.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed
Jul 12 23:27:17 EDT
2006 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

So it's no an 'ls' issue.

I should add that the xfs filesystem I tried this on was not
on the same
machine. It was Gentoo Linux too.
