YOUR TURN: Your Fave, Free Admin Tools; Tales from the IT
Trenches
- YOUR FAVE, FREE ADMIN TOOLS
You've heard the old adage, "Never buy something you
could get for
free." Over at Redmond magazine, they think so too!
That's why they're
compiling a list of the very best free tools for systems
administrators
for an upcoming article.
Got a little app that you absolutely can't do without and
paid nary a
dime for it? Let Greg Shields know by posting at the link
below. We're
talking completely free stuff here: No shareware or
time-bombed
evaluations allowed -- only the best and the free-est. Tell
Greg all
about the tool: its name, where it's most useful and how it
works and
where you can download it. And be sure to include your
contact
information so he can reach you if he has any questions.
http://redmondmag.com/feedback/yourturn.asp?yourid=65
- TALES FROM THE IT TRENCHES
Did you hear the one about the company's sudden bandwidth
problems,
which were eventually traced to rats chewing through wiring
in the
decades-old office building? Or the one where the user
couldn't
figure out why his keyboard made an unusual beeping sound
every time
he hit the Escape key? Or were you the one who finally
figured out
that your daily server-going-south was attributed to a
connected
UPS whose internal battery was on the fritz?
If this is all in a day's work for you, send your story to
us and
we'll showcase it on MCPmag.com, in a feature we like to
call
"Tales from the IT Trenches." Whether it's a
horror story or a tale
of triumph, share it with your fellow IT pros and we'll
offer you
a small stipend for the effort and boundless glory and
recognition
from your peers. And don't worry -- your story doesn't have
to be
polished, but clear writing counts.
Tales should be 150 to 500 words (and we'll take longer
pieces if you
just can't stop yourself); submit them in an e-mail in plain
text
format to: michaeld mcpmag.com with "Tales from the IT
Trenches" on
the subject line of your message.
Submission deadline is Oct. 13. The best stories and tips
will be
featured online on MCPmag.com in the next few months.

WEB POLL: http://mcpmag.com/polls/
Security vendors complain that Vista's security features are
too
competitive. What do you think?
44.9% - Security vendors knew this was coming and should
have
prepared for it.
38.8% - Microsoft can't win -- it will always encroach on
partners'
markets as it makes improvements to future
products.
10.2% - Security vendors are right to complain.
6.1% - Microsoft should always be mindful of features it
adds to
future software so as not to encroach on partners'
markets.
49 people voted. Next poll:
IE 7 is out later this month. Will you be updating to it?
