It looks better now (using the default number of threads =
10), but clamd 0.90 
still uses much more resources on my low traffic box than
0.88 does on my high 
traffic box, so I am reluctant to upgrade the other one.

Confirmed. There seems to be a problem with calling fork()
since in the 
foreground mode the high CPU usage is low.

I'm workig on this together with Daniel Eischen which knows
the FreeBSD
thread stuff very well.
