Thread: OT: How to keep sendmail from using /etc/passwd

OT: How to keep sendmail from using /etc/passwd
country flaguser name
United States
2007-03-02 19:38:07
I know this question is better for a sendmail user group,
but hopefully
it's a quick and easy answer.

I need to know if there's a way to tell sendmail to not
consider using
/etc/passwd for the LHS and to strictly rely on aliases and
virtusertable. I have e-mail addresses like mikesomedomain.com, but
the username in /etc/passwd is mblack. The problem is that
mblacksomedomain.com works as a valid address.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Add

somedomain.com	error:5.1.1:550 User unknown

to the virtusertable, it'll prevent it from falling through
to local user.

I believe this will also stop it from falling through to
aliases as
well, at least in the default sendmail configuration that
requires a
domain for non-local mail.

Not a problem: Just point explicitly to the alias in the
virtusertable:

somealiassomedomain.com somealias

We've got several like this.

I think what he might be looking for is the
virtusertable/aliases/sendmail,
do-not-expand "trick".

mikedomaina.com mike
mikedomainb.com mikey

The means deliver to that account and do not expand, use
aliases, etc.
