how about putting that great howto into a wiki?
some updates:
- you need to remove option -mno-cygwin also in other
libraries's makefiles
than only x264's. maybe you could make a generic notion of
removing it whenever
it occurs.
- you need to install some version of libpng and
libpng-devel to get
screenshots to work.
- to get optional 3gpp audio coding you need to install
source for amr codecs,
instructions in [0].

- you do not need to move or copy compiled libraries.
instead, specify [1] for
mplayer's configure script.
[1] --with-extralibdir=/usr/local/lib
- mencoder compiles beautifully, no need to disable it. very
useful e.g. to
rotate 3gp mobile phone videos.
- to avoid harmless but annoying ldd errors in
configure.logs, install [2]
somewhere along the path, for example /usr/bin/ .
