MPEG encoding hangs

Hi,
I was trying to encode a sequence of PNG images into an MPEG
movie (rather 
than the default AVI) and found that mencoder hangs when
writing the 
index. The movie file is created with a size of 4096 k, and
mencoder gets 
to the point of writing the index, but then nothing happens
anymore, and 
the process has to be killed with option -9 in order to get
back to the 
prompt. Has anyone found a similar problem or am I doing
something wrong?
