I had a similar problem about a year ago with a desktop PC I
built
from components in 2003.
It had an Intel D865GBFL Motherboard with a Pentium 4 2.4
GHZ
processor and an ATI 8500 Video Card.
The PC would work fine up to a certain point and then the
screen
would start jumping uncontrollably.
Each time this happened and it was usually, but not always,
when I
was working on an Excel spreadsheet - I would try to close
out the
active programs and reboot the PC.
Even rebooting was a problem via the screen due to the
'Shutdown/
Restart/ Logoff' window selections jumping all over the
place.
Very,very annoying!
After rebooting the problem seemed to go away for a while,
then maybe
a day or two later, when of course I was in the middle of
something
important - you guessed it.
I searched high and low for a software problem that could
cause this,
but could find none.
So I started changing out hardware components.
First the Video Card, then the Ram modules, Hard Drive,
Power supply,
Mouse, Keyboard, whatever, with no luck.
I finally concluded it had to be a connection within the
Motherboard
that would cause some circuit to disconnect when the PC
reached a
certain temperature.
Rather than change out the MB, I went for a complete new
system and
upgraded to XP and Office 2003.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if your problem is
the same
as mine was, and your PC is still under warranty, talk to
your supplier.
Even highly rated Motheboards are known to have bad
capacitors, and
other components. With a problem that comes and goes, the
time and
effort that would be necessary to find it is not worth the
trouble
with hardware not terribly expensive these days.
