A couple that I had to work to train myself to use and am
really glad I did
are shift-space bar to select a row and control-space bar to
select a
column. Then after using either of these there are control
plus and control
minus to insert or delete a row or column. Also, using F4 to
repeat the last
formatting action can save a lot of time, but it's a little
hard to
determine which actions this will repeat and which it
won't, so you do have
to be careful with it. All the control-shift-numbers for
formatting could be
useful. I am constantly using control-shift-1 to format
cells as number with
commas and 2 decimal places, and I wish there was a shortcut
for the same
format with no decimal places. Control-shift-$ for the
currency format is
another one that I use often. Using a custom format with a
comma after the
format to format numbers in thousands comes in handy. A lot
of people new to
Excel don't know that you can autofit rows or columns by
double-clicking on
the bottom or right border of the row or column.

Thanks for the 1e6 tip, Bob. That is REALLY cool!

I am compiling a list of some of the more useful, mostly
under-used, tips

and tricks in Excel. I am not talking about some of the more
obscure stuff
in Bob's book, but the stuff that we may take for granted,
but are amazed
when other people don't know, that make us smile when they
see how useful

they are.

As a couple of examples of the things I mean:

- the F9 key to evaluate a formula, or part of a formula, in
the function
bar

- double-clicking the icon painter to allow dis-contiguous
formatting of
cells

- the black cross autofill feature.

There are other such tips, ones that you use frequently and
you find to be

big labour savers, or just so useful. Best of all if they
ease
Excelfunctionality, such as charting, pivot tables.

For information, I am building it to throw into training
courses, not
specifically a tips session, but sprinkled throughout. I am
hoping to find
which ones are really found useful, and also to learn some
that I don't
know/use now.

Thanks

Bob
