It sounds like what you want is conditional formatting.

If you highlight the columns you want, and on the menu bar
choose
Format.... Conditional Formatting

>From there you define things like fonts/colours/borders
to be applied
when cells meet certain criteria (eg if value is between 1
and 100,
make the text red).

Put this condition as a "formula is" in the
conditional formatting for A!
=countif($A:$E,A1)>1
Then select a background colour that you want.
Go back and check ithe formula because Excel is almost
certain to have put
quotation marks round it.
Now copy A1 and "paste special" formats to A1:E33
