Here's a fudge that may work for you.
Insert>Picture>Wordart. Select the second option from
top left. Select>
right click> Format Wordart and on Colors and lines set
the transparency
to 100%. Ensure protection is locked and adjust size to fit
cell. Now
select all cells and Format>Cells>Protection and
untick the locked box.
Then it's Tools>Protection>Protect sheet and that
should be it!
