Hello,

I use mol on an iBook G4 1,33GHz with Gentoo Linux and
Tiger. I have a
problem with the trackpad: Inside of mol tapping on the
trackpad is
active, but I don't like tapping. In Linux or if I start
Tiger without
mol, tapping is disabled.

In Linux the trackpad uses the appletouch kernel module and
the synaptics
X11 driver.

I have another iBook, a G3 with the older trackpad, which
uses the
standard mouse driver and Mac OS 10.3 Panther installed.
There the
trackpad works like expected also in mol. On both iBooks run
kernel 2.6.15
and mol 0.9.71_pre8.

Thanks for the good work,
cu, Magnum

Here the solution:

This is not a mol issue, but the Linux kernel has no option
to disable
tapping with the Apple USB trackpads.

I wrote a small patch that disables tapping in the kernel,
see my website
for details: http://cmr.forestfactory.de/ibook/linux/ibook_linux.html

For folks who don't want to patch the kernel, the recent
versions of
pbbuttonsd are able to set the USB trackpads to notap (in
addition to
its primary function, which is to handle the laptop keys
like
brightness, volume, power, as well as keyboard illumination
and lid
closing). Packages exist in most ppc distros, or directly
from
http://pbbuttons.sourceforge.net/projects/pbbuttonsd/

In which version? About three weeks ago Matthias Grimm told
me, that he
cannot implement that until there is an interface in the
kernel. Johannes
Berg tried to do this job but had no success and did not
continue.

The latest version you can download there is the ancient
0.7.2, which is
quite unusable on my iBook G4 because of some really bad
bugs and does of
course not support USB trackpads. The current site seems to
be here:
http://pbbuttons.berlios
.de/ (down at the moment)

Ah, please forgive me, I am mistaken then. I have an
oldworld machine
and the new code to deal with the USB trackpads broke on my
ADB
machine so I presumed it must work on USB!

Obviously the notap code for ADB is already in the kernel. I
see that
your kernel patch permanently disables the tap & drag
& lock features
(which is probably what most of us would want anyway).

Sorry for the mistaken information.

Yes it seems to be a big mess with these new USB devices.
Some things work
now, but there are still enough issues left :-/

Good night,
