Hello Readers,
We've got a great lineup of interesting articles for you
this month on
MacDevCenter. Whether you want to build museum-style
interactive demos
that work on iPods or a simple Cocoa HTTP server, or find
out about Peter
Green's homemade Mac tablet computers, you'll find something
of interest.
And our ace crew of bloggers keeps things lively on a daily
basis--if you
have opinions on Mac-based PVR systems, Mac text editors, or
the state of
Mac software development, please check out the recent
related blogs and
chime in.
If you'll be attending Macworld next month, we've got a full
lineup of
author talks and special O'Reilly events scheduled, as well
as some great
discounts and deals. Check out the O'Reilly Happenings at
Macworld page
<http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2006/12/
11/macworld.html>, and if
you're at the show, make sure to stop by and say hi. We'll
be at booth
#2112 in the South Hall.
I'd like to introduce myself as your new MacDevCenter
editor. I've been
working with O'Reilly Media's online properties in different
editorial
roles for over six years, and I'm a dedicated and
enthusiastic advocate
for Apple technologies. Derrick Story, who built this site
from the ground
up, has taken a new position at O'Reilly as our Digital
Media Evangelist.
I think this is a great move for both Derrick and O'Reilly,
but he will be
sorely missed as the leader of MacDevCenter. Happily,
Derrick promises not
to leave us entirely and will continue to post to the
MacDevCenter blog
when he has time.
In the near future I'll be posting a new survey to learn
more about your
wants and desires for MacDevCenter, but please feel free to
drop me an
email anytime at bruce oreilly.com with your thoughts, comments,
suggestions,
or questions. I look forward to hearing from you and helping
to maintain this
site as the premier independent online Mac developer
resource.
Happy reading,
Bruce Stewart

Building Interactive iPod Experiences
The interactive multimedia presentation is one of the
least-trumpeted
features of the iPod. In this article, Erica Sadun

of interactive iPod design by showing how to use the iPod
Notes feature to

What's The Big Deal About Making Music Players Social?
Microsoft Zune and
the Big Idea
Why does Microsoft insist that a social music player, its
upcoming Zune,
is the wave of the future? Zune social networking manifests
itself through
its Wi-Fi-based music sharing and its PC-based (and
presumably
MySpace-inspired) Zune Marketplace. Microsoft gambles that
these two
spheres are sufficient to define a new and unique Zune
space. Erica Sadun
takes a good hard look at the Zune and tries to figure out
if it is the
wave of the future--or just a pipe dream.

Text Tricks and More Text Tricks
We've covered text editors here before. We know, from
various posts at the
Mac DevCenter blog, that our readers are often as fanatical
about using
plain text as we are. Tips on using your editor of choice
are easy to
find, but we thought it would be fun to gather a whole bunch
of them
together for the first time; not only to spread the word,
but to invite
our readers to add their own tips and time-savers. We've
also asked a
handful of Mac users to contribute their own favorite text
tricks.

Burn Your New iTunes Movies to DVD (and Protect Your Other
iTunes
Purchases)
How much money have you spent at the iTunes store? And what
do you have to
show for it? An iPod full of music? TV shows? Those new
games and movies?
Too many people forget how much cash they've put into their
digital media.
And when bad things happen--house fires, computer theft,
iPod
loss--they're not always prepared to be able to recover
those digital
assets. Erica Sadun shows you archiving techniques to
preserve your
(hefty) iTunes investment.

Miglia TVMicro and EyeTV: Easy TV on Your Mac
The Miglia TVMicro is a small USB device and comes bundled
with a remote
control and the renowned EyeTV app, which makes it trivial
to pull up
program listings, schedule recordings, and more. Costing
roughly $100,
this is a purchase that might just pay for itself sooner
than you think.
Matthew Russell reviews.
