Dear Mac Reader,

Ten years ago, when I was a sysadmin and writer, I had
people constantly
asking me if it was safe to buy a Mac. There were all sorts
of wild
speculation about Sun buying Apple or Cupertino closing its
doors
altogether. Ah, the good old days, right?

Fast forward one decade. I've just wrapped up my Macworld SF
'06 duties,
and I want you to know something. If there was any doubt
whatsoever about
the future of this platform, banish it from your mind right
now. Apple is
as strong going into 2006 as I can remember.

First, the Intel machines will be a hit. If Apple can behave
itself and
not go "Motorola" on Intel, these two companies
are exactly what each
other needs. Paul Otellini (Intel CEO) gets it. If you'd
like an
informative backgrounder on him, take a look at the January
9 issue of
BusinessWeek magazine. They've got a terrific piece on Intel
generally,
and Otellini specifically.

Apple is writing great software too. Both iWork and iLife
'06 are stellar
examples of how to create compelling consumer titles.
Aperture, though
misunderstood at the moment, is solid and has a promising
future. And Mac
OS X looks better than ever.

Cupertino has wisely positioned its products in the center
of the popular
consumer media arena. Music, photography, personal
publishing,
broadcasting, and video have appeal that will extend far
beyond 2006. You,
by extension of being a charter member of this community,
are at the
forefront of what I see to be a truly exciting time in
technology.

Stay tuned to Mac DevCenter. We are going to be firing on
all cylinders
this year. We'll have to if we're going to keep up with
Apple.

Until next time,

-Derrick

Intel and More Inside
Saving the best for last is the old saw Steve Jobs lives by
when it comes
to addressing his Macworld audiences. As Daniel Steinberg
reports from
Macworld SF 2006, Jobs spent the first 90 minutes of his
keynote on
Apple's sales revenues, additions to two of the iApps and
the introduction
of a new one, and more, before casually mentioning the
PowerBook is being
replaced by the Intel-powered MacBook Pro. As Daniel puts
it, for Jobs,
this is "pure theatre." Read Daniel's extensive
report on all of Jobs'
announcements.
