I had the same problem with my 8300. The problem is that
verizon seems to want PAP authentication, not the
CHAP authentication your computer is trying to use. The
instructions for how to change it on a Mac are at

That thread refers to a 9800, but the same thing works for an 8300 and
will probably work for you, since it's a change to OSX.
