I don't know the exact terminology, but DUN deducting from minutes
DOES WORK for many people. Some people have lost it because of
various reasons...one of which I thought was getting a new EVDO phone.
But if your EVDO E815 works, I'm not exactly sure why others have
lost the backdoor.
Here are some recent quotes from the moderator of the
InternetByCellPhone group:
"The correct term is "Broadband Access Connect-Handset"..."
"...but folks need to bear in mind.... when one "deactivates" the
"Broadband Connect - Handset" data "feature", it can NOT be
"re-activated" before the first day in the next billing period.
Verizon does not mention any of this at their web page on the subject at

If I understand this correctly, you are essentially signing up for the
$59.95 data plan which is prorated at $2/day when you cancel it before
a full month is used. This sounds like a viable option for people who
want to access the 'net via cell phone on rare occasions...say 4 days
in July, then 3 days in Sept., etc. I use it fairly regularly
throughout the year for short periods of time (mostly to check email,
not web browsing), so this is not an option for me.
