I'm thinking that it's a pretty amazing deal to have
unlimited data
access for just $20 per month. If tethering was also added
to that,
it wouldn't be fair to AT&T who would have to have a lot
of
infrastructure to support it. I expect that if they add
tethering,
they'll need to add it at an extra fee. My guess is that
they wanted
a simple plan to start, considering the ground-breaking way
they
handles the signup, and that they will add the tethering
option later
on. Plus, it may be that Leopard contains something to make
the
tethering simple, and Leopard wasn't ready for release at
the time of
the iPhone.

Deb, my guess is with you. I think that they kept the plans
and what is
offered very simple for the introduction. It was not about
the phone service
at introduction. Everything was about the iPhone. Their
plans are very
reasonable for the services provided. When I got my BB, my
service was a
minimum of $115 a month for less than I get on my iPhone for
$59.95. There
is good news. Since the release of the iPhone, I was able to
change my plan
to an even better price for our BB’s. I am thankful for
that. We tether with
both of our BB’s because we travel to so many places that do
not have WiFi.

It would be very easy to add tethering later. They already
offer several
plans, based upon your needs. It would be easy to offer one
with tethering.
They have that already set up for other phones. Both of our
Blackberry
Phones tether on our PC’s and PC side of my Mac. I have
tried several
suggested solutions for tethering to my Mac unsuccessfully.
I really hope
that they will add tethering with the iPhone. It would make
it perfect for
me!

Since the tethering programs for the BlackBerry are written
so specific to
each model and the iPhone was protected so much until its
launch, I am also
leaning toward thinking that programmers were unable to
create a tethering
program until its release. Remember how few accessories
there were at
launch? The guys at Cingular and at our Mac Store all think
that it will
come now that the product is launched. I sure hope so!

Have a super day!

Cindy…who is also itching for Leopard to be released!
Definitely on my
shopping list!

A question for all the folks asking about tethering - would
tethering
be attractive solely on the EDGE network? To me, not an
iPhone user
but someone considering one, EDGE would be adequate for the

occasional use as would be the case with an iPhone (or any
smart
phone). But I would think I'd be more dissatisfied or
frustrated with
EDGE if I were attempting to use it for more generalized
browsing and
IM and mail as would be the case with my using a laptop.

I have been a Verizon EVDO user, via both tethering and
dedicated
EVDO modem hardware. Sometimes, I'd be in an area where EVDO
was not
available, and using the laptop with it was pretty painful.

My 2 cents!

Edge is fine for most casual web surfing and email browsing.
It's
faster than any 1XRTT I've used.

In this area, edge is about 175kbps, and 1XRTT is about
75kbps

My perspective on this - EDGE is just fine for IM and the
majority of
email. Browsing would be a little more painful. I say this
because I
used to tether my computers while using Verizon's 14.4
connection. I
haven't had to use that for a while though...

I now have the EVDO card, and it's obviously much
better=faster, but has
the drawback that it uses the laptop's batteries, where
tethering my
Moto phone (E815 now, but going back 3-4 phones also) wasn't
an addition
drain on the laptop.
