I spent 8 years in the military and we hooked personal laptops up and
desktops up all the time, nobody ever tried to ³seize² them. The primary
reason they stick to windows is the modularity of them, if something gets
ruined in a tower they can replace the one part instead of buying a new
multi-thousand dollar tower because something broke. They can train a tech
in a few weeks to a couple months to work on them when needed, whereas to
train someone to deal with the unix side of the mac would be quite
extensive, then youıve got the fact that the vast majority of the populace
has used a windows machine which means you donıt have to train every troop
how to use the new computer sitting there.....they also can buy workstations
from the various OEM manufacturers for little to nothing because of the
quantity they order in.... (2500 workstations from dell that would have been
$500 a piece become $200 a piece, things like that...)

PART of the reason why the military (and many depts of the US Govt)
want windows is that they can seize control of the computer [ and do
lots of things to that computer.. ] if you hook an unauthorized
computer up to their network ... they can not do this it a Mac hooks
up ...

I understand the other reasons you note

Thank you for your military service. It is greatly appreciated!

I mostly agree except for 2 very minor issues.

1. Mac towers are increasingly just PCs running OSX. Everything but the board is easily
replaced.

2. Wasn't the military involved in the creation of Unix? Don't they still use it for most
operations? I remember a few years back when they were discussing sending hundreds
Unix Sparc box's over to Iraq.

background ... I spend 31 years in the military and specifically at
times in areas the areas qualified to know some of these things
(including command) ... and the DOD systems with networks DO have the
capability to control the network and seize unauthorized
computers ... not all networks have that function turned on as the
material they allow access to may not be restricted ... but believe
me the capability is there ... and is part of DOD directives .... the
same is true with the VA system ...

yes price and the other reasons you note are a definite factor ...
but DOD really does worry about security!
