Hi All,
Here's a problem I've run into since upgrading to Apple's Tiger operating
system. I would sure appreciate a helping hand here. I've got it pretty
well diagnosed but I can't solve it!
I administer three websites: one is hosted by GoDaddy; the other two are
hosted by a private server (aka F-server). The latter sites are
bethrosengard.com and word.mvps.org/mac.
Since upgrading to Tiger, I can only access the GoDaddy site by turning on
"use passive FTP", which I never had to do before.
I cannot access the two F-server sites at all ... UNLESS I turn off the
system Firewall on my G5 iMac (OS 10.4.8). Turning on "use passive FTP"
doesn't work with F-server (and the server owner says not to use passive FTP
anyway).
In SysPrefs>Sharing, I *do* have FTP access checked so it's not that.
I can view both sites on the web with no problem; I just can't access them
from Dreamweaver.
I tested the Apple FTP function in Terminal. It works fine.
My Dreamweaver settings are correct (with Port 21 designated for FTP).
And since shutting off the Firewall gives me access, there's no reason to
blame this on DW; it's working fine.
The problem is that the firewall effectively closes Port 20, a second
requisite port from which the FTP server responds and which is necessary for
the Data Channel to function. Turning on passive FTP allows Port 20 to be
bypassed, in a manner of speaking. (That's a very non-tech description.

There is no way to change or add to the OS's port designation for built-in
services like FTP. (Nor is there any way to list two ports in DW's settings
if that would even help.)
At the moment, if I want to access my online site files or upload a file, I
have to turn off the firewall. That's not a good idea and it's a PITA! So
what can I do?
TIA,
Beth
