System configuration update problem

I'm trying to setup a new system and running into a problem
when I update the 'System Configuration' page.  When I hit
'Update Settings', I get a popup 'Maia Debug Window'
with no information listed, and my main browser window goes
blank with the URL .../mail/xadminsystem.php.  If I go back
in, the settings I just changed did get updated, but I'm
wary of using this system in production in case there are
any other problems.  I have $debuglevel = LOG_ERR and $debug
= false in my config.php.  I'm somewhat following Stephen
Carter's guide, but attempting to use Maia 1.0.1 so there
are some differences (just built a Suse 10.1 box, but it's
misbehving badly so I just thought I'd revert back to
10.0).  Other versions: Suse 10.0, PEAR 1.3.6, Perl 5.8.7,
amavisd-new-2.2.1+MMG 1.0.1.

Sometimes the text that is supposed to be in the debug box
gets placed in an
html element that doesn't render properly.  If you can
reproduce it, could you
either look in the source ("view source" in your
browser) or look in the server
logs to see if there's a more helpful error message?

Lately I've been battling several php5 issues, where they
made backwards
incompatible changes. :(   (Thanks for nothing, php devs.)
