As those of you who have read the Maia FAQ know, Maia
Mailguard was
named for one of my dogs, Maia (ch. Maiaipa), the
ten-year-old matriarch
of our four-dog pack of Alaskan Klee Kai (miniature
huskies), mother to
two of them, and to almost a dozen others over the years,
including a
couple of champion show-dogs.  She's the mascot whose
threatening stare
graces the Maia Mailguard logo.

At the moment, however, Maia is undergoing emergency surgery
for
pyometra (an infection of the uterus).  With her breeding
days behind
her, she's being spayed, but the infection complicates
matters, as she's
lost a lot of blood and she's likely in septic shock. 
Think of it like
a ruptured appendix in a human to appreciate the severity of
Maia's
condition.  She's in good veterinary hands, but major
surgery like this
always comes with significant risks.

It's been a rough few weeks for our dogs lately--I just
barely saved
Maia from choking to death on a morsel of food a couple of
weeks ago,
when we discovered she'd developed an allergy that was
clogging her nose
and swelling her throat.  Then this past week a checkup
revealed that
the patriarch of our pack, Zorro, has a leaky heart valve
(early-stage
mitral disease).  Today's news was thus just the latest in
a series of
distressing discoveries.

If you're the praying sort, Maia could surely use the help.
 Regardless,
if you could keep Maia in your thoughts today, good wishes
from her
"fans" would definitely be appreciated.

Hang in there, girl.
