weird login issue

I am running Apache 1.3.33 with php 4 on a debian machine. 
Everything 
checks out fine in all conftests.  I get the login page, I
login and it 
just sits there with a blank page at xlogin.php.  The weird
thing is if 
I wipe our xlogin.php I hit enter, I am redirected to
welcome.php and 
everything works just fine.  What could cause this problem?

An error in the pear libs causes a debugging warning message
to be output, which
disrupts the http redirect to continue on to the welcome
page.

Disabling the debug window fixes it, but unfortunately that
code was messed up
until a recent trunk. lol
