I hear ya! I've been scratching my heads for weeks too ;)
I am not aware of any modification beyond that which I was
directed to
do from the list but then again, never say never! I also
worked
directly from the CLI (albeit remotely) but I agree that
grabbing a
fresh copy and trying again maybe in order now- I will try
this keep the
list posted.
Is my thought of flushing the Database content and starting
afresh
feasible/likely to work/a silly idea if all else fails?

Jim. The code itself offers no explanations as to how you
could be

The fact that you're the only one reporting it, though,
makes me wonder
whether your amavisd-maia file might be corrupt. Have any
modifications
been made to it, other than the debugging changes David
instructed you
to add? Did you possibly cut-and-paste the amavisd-maia
code from a web
browser source listing, or download it on a Windows box that
might have
inserted carriage returns in unfortunate places? For the
sake of
everyone's sanity, it might be worth downloading a fresh
copy of
amavisd-maia, either from the 1.0.1 tarball or from the svn
repository.
