Just to be clear on this: my server never goes away, and
amavisd-maia
does not complain about losing the connection to the server.
It
complains instead about the SpamAssassin scan taking too
long. What
mystifies me is that I never see this delay if I run
SpamAssassin by
hand, even with Bayes turned on. It only happens when it is
run under
amavisd.

Look for "SA TIMED OUT".

Why not try it as a test? It's easy enough to do. Just
change "use_bayes
1" to "use_bayes 0" in your local.cf file,
then restart amavisd. If it
doesn't fix your problem, it's just as easy to turn back on
again. (Just
to be on the safe side, I also set
"use_bayes_rules" to 0 or 1
appropriately)
