I'll hazard another guess, here--you installed amavisd-new,
and you're
running the amavisd that came with amavisd-new, rather than
amavisd-maia. $key_file is a Maia-specific addition that
only
amavisd-maia knows about, which would explain why
amavisd-new would be
confused.
You don't need (or want) amavisd-new installed. Everything
you need
comes in the Maia tarball, and it's the
"amavisd-maia" file that you
want to start instead of "amavisd". If you
installed amavisd-new using
a package management tool, you should also remove it so that
it does not
auto-update and overwrite amavisd-maia the next time a new
amavisd-new
package becomes available.
