Oh, by all means you should be doing all of your /rejections/ in the
upstream instance. You don't need to do the actual /aliasing/ there,
however.
Rejecting unknown users is done in the "smtpd_recipient_restrictions"
setting, where you specify the gauntlet of tests that should be
performed. Some typical tests you might want to use there are
"permit_mynetworks", "reject_unauth_destination",
"reject_non_fqdn_recipient" and "reject_unverified_recipient". These
tests will use your virtual alias maps if you've defined any.
