But if you are backing up, you'll want the whole maia
database (minus  
the bayes and awl stuff, it's not as critical).  There are
many  
linked tables that are all needed as part of the system.

As David pointed out, you need to back up /all/ the tables,
not just
maia_mail.  That table only contains the raw mail contents,
not the
owner references, spam information, virus info, etc. that
may be
associated with that item.  If you only back up the
maia_mail table, it
won't help you much to restore it if you've lost the rest of
the tables.
 Back up everything in the Maia database.
