I tried the amavisd-maia debug with loglevel 5 and didn't
get anything
other than the standard startup output with no errors. I
checked the
Unix::Syslog module and it seems to be the most recent
version. I tried
pointing the $SYSLOG_LEVEL variable to mail.info and
mail.debug and that
didn't help either.
If I could just get a hint from a log file!!!!

Try starting amavisd-maia in the foreground in debug mode.
Set
$log_level = 5 in your amavisd.conf file, and then start
amavisd-maia as
"amavisd-maia debug", which should hopefully give
you some more insight
into where the error is occurring, and perhaps what's
causing it. It
may be that you're missing the Unix::Syslog module, or that
the module
version is incompatible, or that your $SYSLOG_LEVEL setting
points to an
undefined/invalid facility (default is
"mail.debug").
