You can login to mysql manually from the command line and
issue a "drop
database maia;" command if you really want to get rid
of the entire Maia
database.  You'll have to recreate it following the steps in
the install
document, of course.

As for your socket issue, you probably want to check your
my.cnf file to
verify where the mysql.sock file is being written (it should
be a
setting called "socket"), and make sure that mysql
is looking for it in
the right place.
