I've got a reasonable RPM together for maia mailguard, which
I was hoping to
be able to submit for inclusion in Fedora, but there are
some concerns over
the license. Basically, "not free enough"
according to the FSF (and Debian
legal), so the Fedora packaging board has good reason to
believe this can't
go into Fedora-proper.
On the license front... Someone asked "hey, isn't this
just a fork of
amavisd-new?" And if so "how can it be licensed
anything but GPL?". I didn't
have answers for that, and didn't find one with a tiny bit
of poking at the
licensing pages in the maia wiki, so I'm asking here. Is the
maia license
more specific to the web ui portion and the core
amavisd-maia bits still GPL
or something along those lines?
Regardless, even if I can't get maia into the official
Fedora repo, I'll
probably get the package stashed in a 3rd-party repo
somewhere...

You are, as usual, the man with the RPM's!
At some point I really need to get debian packages put
together. One of
these days..

i already has a spec file maia, if you like you can use.
there're a few tricks to be able to put config files under
/etc/ and to
be able to use together with clamd from extras.

Search the mailing list archives. There's a long thread in
there from
last year that covers all the licensing issues.

Close. See

Whether you can persuade a repository to include your RPM or
not, I'm
sure that a lot of Maia users would love to have access to
it, even if
it's just linked from the Maia website. If you host it
yourself we can
link to it from the Maia downloads page, or we can host a
copy of it for
you if you prefer.

Thanks, but I've already done the same, a spec file isn't a
problem.
The issue at hand is the license.

Excellent, that's exactly what I was looking for. Shoulda
searched
the list archive first...

Cool. Sounds like its a no-go for the official Fedora repo
(more or
less the same ruling as Debian, based on FSF feedback), but
I've got
connections to a few 3rd-party ones, so getting it into one
of them
shouldn't be a problem. I'll keep ya posted...

We have packages for ubuntu. They are only for use for our
clients at
present (private repo) but I can check out and see if the
source tarball
might be made available to you, or even debs. we have
targetted dapper
mostly, apt-get install maia-mailguard works pretty well -
some post
configuration etc
If there is big community demand I am also happy to consider
wider
publishing of our packages...

If you could at least publish the diff's, that would be
great! It'd be
nice to have a good almost-working start for debian
packages.
If you can publish deb's too, heck, all the better for those
Ubuntu users
out there!

I'll get Nick on to it - he did them and should have 1.0.2
packages. The
1.0.1 packages work pretty well.
Nick - can you get a diff happening or find a public place
for the debs?
I don't want our private sol1 repo open to the world just
yet...

Hi,
For what it worth, I have fabricated a script that will
take a fresh
install of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS 'server' (i.e., a very basic
linux install
with no GUI) almost all the way to maia using public
repositories.... You
can find a basic 'how-to' install this style of Ubuntu
Dapper at:
http://ww
w.dpsims.com/~dpsims/ubuntu_server
Then, you can find a script that will install almost
everything Maia needs
using apt-get at:
http://www.dpsims.com/~dpsims/setup_dapper_for_maia_sh
.txt
If anyone finds this useful or would like to suggest ways of
improving the
process of building a Maia Mailguard appliance on Ubuntu, I
would be
interested to know about it....
Thanks,
Dave Sims
