Thread: Issue with recipient_delimiter

Issue with recipient_delimiter

(my apologies if this makes it through twice, I sent it from
the wrong sender
 address originally)

Hello,

I'm having an issue where many of my users, myself included,
make frequent use
of recipient delimiters. For example, this message is sent
with the "+maia"
delimiter. My users then filter mail into various mailboxes
based on the
delimiter. This also provides users with a way to track
where their spam is
coming from, etc.

In my setup, there are several virtual-alias domains, all of
which are
resolved to userprimarydomain.com prior to being handed
off to maia. At
present, this works well for us, as in general we don't care
to distinguish
(as far as spam/virus settings) where it got sent, just
which user will end up
receiving it. If a mail is sent to userA+some_delimitervirtdomain2.com, maia
sees it, and processes it as userA+some_delimiterprimarydomain.com.

The problem that arises is that when mail is received, maia
doesn't recognize
that user+delimiterdomain.com is really the same as userdomain.com. The
catch-all user ends up catching these, and thus the users
preferences are
bypassed.

I've set recipient_delimiter to '+' in both amavisd.conf and
config.php. Is
there something that I'm missing, or is there at present no
way to accomplish
what I'm trying to do?

Thanks,
Edward Roper

While amavisd-maia is aware of the recipient_delimiter, the
rest of Maia
is not. The way to achieve what you're after is to use
Maia's
address-linking feature to add both addresses to the same
Maia user
account. You can do this from the Admin->Users page by
adding the new
address (e.g. user+whateverdomain), then on the same
page linking that
address to the appropriate user account. That way mail for
either of
those addresses will be associated with the same Maia user.

Thanks for the quick reply. While your proposed solution
would work, I would
like to avoid having to manage the list delimited addresses
for everyone else.
My users tend to dream these things up whenever signing up
for some new
webapp, etc. This would require frequent updating on my
part.

I'm thinking that I could modify the php interface to
support the delimiters
(strip them when authenticating), thus allowing users to add
the aliases
themselves, or I could modify the mail-handling portion of
maia to fully
support recipient delimiters. In terms of the latter, what
functions would I
need to investigate, or would this be a wider-sweeping
change than would be
worth it?

Thanks again,
Edward
