Um, I've done a lot of linking of mail addresses, and I
didn't find that I lost protection because of it.
Have you set a default level for your domain(s)?
Also, later in my setup procedure, I coerced the protection
levels - I set them all to be the same - by modifying the
appropriate config file - config.php.
That way, my users can't even turn off protection.
