Implementation Question

Hi folks,

I've been lurking on the list now for a while, and first off
I just want to
say how impressed I am with this community on how they came
to the aid of
Eugene. It is this kind of helpful advise that gives a
project like this a
good name.

I am just building my MM box, and I have a few questions
regarding
implementation that I have not seen an answer for yet.

When I complete testing and configuration, can I place MM
in-between my
firewall and my exchange server so that the mail (spam
included) keeps
flowing through unimpeded? What I would like to do is turn
on the
functionality on a user by user basis until I configure the
entire company
(only 80 employees). Although I'd appreciate direction on
how to accomplish
this, I'd be happy with an answer that it is possible and I
will look for
how to do it myself a bit deeper.

Thanks in advance.

With regards,

I'm not sure if I fully understand what you mean, but
between your
firewall and exchange server is exactly where you should
place it. You
can choose not to do spam filtering as well (disable it for
the
system/domain default account), then you can add the
domain(s), set it
to not scan by default then add each user and enable the
functionality
you want.

This approach seems a little 'backwards' tho, normally you
would enable
scanning for the domain and either import an user list or
set up
auto-creation of users. At least that's what I would do

No, it's not backwards; in fact, it's exactly how Maia is
designed.
We've always had it implemented so that it causes the least
surprise
to the end user, so that Maia can be inserted into the mail
stream
without it seeming to lose mail. When I set it up as an
ISP, I leave
scanning off for all users and then require them to log in
(thus
creating their Maia account) and activate their spam filters
- that
way they know where to look when it blocks something.

Add Maia into the data stream, but leave the default (.) and
domain
settings (domain.tld) to not scan (except maybe for viruses)
and
then create a few users to activate first... You can also
take the
blended approach and turn on filtering for the domain
user and
manage it all as the admin, and slowly give parts of it to
the users
by creating the user accounts.
