how it behaves...

Here's my sa_rule_updater.sh script:

Looking this over, I just remembered that I've had problems
doing ...amavisd
restart manually. When I looked into my
/etc/rc.d/init.d/amavisd script I
noticed that I wasn't using /usr/sbin/amavisd
{start|stop|debug|reload}.
Instead, I was using the loadproc/killproc shell functions
defined in my
/etc/rc.d/init.d/functions file.

Switching the /etc/rc.d/init.d/amavisd script so that it
used
/usr/sbin/amavisd to start/stop/reload the daemon made the
problems I'd been
experiencing on manual restarts go away. I'll wait and see
if it makes the
"amavisd crashing in the middle of the night"
problem go away, too.

Of course, if it does, that doesn't explain why things had
been going along
swimmingly for about 9 months with the invalid shell script
.

Darrick,

I also just realized that the restart spamd call won't get
triggered unless
it's already running (more precisely, unless the spam.pid
file exists). So,
once spamd is turned off -- which it was after I installed
maia -- it'll
stay off.
