Hi Derrick,
You suggestion to increase debugging level makes sense.
Should I enable it
in this directive of clamd.conf file:
# Enable debug messages in libclamav.
# Default: no
#Debug yes
Where will the debugging information be written in this
case? To clamd.log
configured in clamd.conf ?
As for freshclam I don't have anything in the crontab
calling it. Should it
be there?

You might check that freshclam isn't killing your clamd
daemon. I had a
similar problem and found that freshclam was sending a
"notify" to the
clamd daemon, which was causing it to die. I modified the
cron script
that was calling freshclam to issue a "server clamd
restart" after
freshclam was run. I know it doesn't answer why clamd is
dying, but it
may be an area to explore. You may want to increase
debugging for a
period of time, but remember to turn it back off or you will
eat disk space!
