It's been a while since I've posted anything to this list,
and for that
I deeply apologize. I'd love to be able to say that I've
been enjoying
a pleasurable vacation somewhere exotic for the past four
months, but
instead I've been busy attending the hospitalizations and
eventual
funerals of loved ones and managing the affairs of elderly
relatives who
no longer remember who I am. Fun times, to be sure, and
it's taken me
some time to find any for myself. There's much I've
neglected in the
meantime, and the Maia project has been one of those
things.

That said, Maia has never been far from my mind, and I've
continued to
think about the improvements I'd like to implement in the
1.0, 1.1 and
2.0 series.

Maia 1.0.3 will likely be the last of the 1.0 series, mainly
a
maintenance release to fix some bugs and provide a small
handful of
minor feature additions that don't involve changes to the
database
structure. Look for this release toward the end of this
month, or early
in February.

Maia 1.1.0 will debut with a new database structure, freeing
us to add a
number of long-awaited and much-requested features, such as
more
granular scoring thresholds for spam, Dynamic Score
Balancing, etc.
This should be a spring release.

Maia 2.0.0 has until now been little more than a vague set
of good ideas
on an indefinite timeline. Today I've begun to put some
structure to
that in the form of some design documents, since this is a
complete
from-scratch rewrite that will replace amavisd-maia with a
homegrown
maiad. You won't likely see a 2.0 release before the late
summer or
fall, but I very much want to get it out sometime this
year.

Once again I apologize for my over-long silence here, and
thank you for
your patience during a trying time. I'd also like to thank
those of you
who stepped up in my absence to answer questions here and
keep the Maia
community going; I truly appreciate that. You've
demonstrated,
certainly, that this is a community worth supporting, and
that Maia
remains important and relevant to the open source community.
 I have no
intention of letting you down.

Here's to a better year for all of us in 2008!

This is great news, mostly the 1.1.0 release I presume (site
is too busy
to "just" do an database upgrade on the fly =) )

I'll admit that I was a bit scared of the project ending up
dead for a
while, but it's great to have some active maintainers back
again

Can't speak for others, but I'm sure looking eagerly forward
to the new
versions. Just curious though, will there be some new
sorting/browsing
of users? Loading those administration pages with 600
domains is quite a
pain in the a**... =)

That's something to address in 1.1; believe me, even with
just a dozen
domains it's a pain to have to administer users. This is
particularly
true for admins who want to be able to manage
quarantines/caches for
their entire user population, which can be tedious without
using the
domain-default accounts as catch-alls. And even with
catch-alls at the
domain level, if you have 600 domains, that's still 600
quarantine/cache
sets to review. A "unified" quarantine/cache
system that lets an
administrator see all of the stuff he has permission to view
in one big
quarantine/cache listing is another much-requested feature.
The trick,
as always, is in how to implement it so that the interface
is quick and
practical. We're always open to ideas and suggestions there

Being a db developer, I've always had problems trying to
display large
amounts of data via the web and agree with most that good
search tools
and proper indexing is the way to go. If you're taking
suggestions for
updates, I'd love this feature with the power to pull as
deep as subject
using regex to show those many spams to several different
users...

My condolences and best wishes to you Robert,

All that said sound terrific!

I would personally like to donate Robert a worth of my
week's lunches. I
believe if everybody who belongs to this community ring can
contribute in
such a manner we would stay lean and healthy but Robert can
be more
productive and contributing into his project with more
vigor, vim, and
vitality
Robert give us a way to show our support.
