I've been running PG 8.3.0 since Wednesday, and have the
same kinda
complaint -- while the pg_restore process is totally
single-threaded,
it was interesting to watch the log files and watch the
tables get
automatically analyzed/indexed/vacuumed in the background.
Also, have you noticed an increase in performance with using
the new
version of Pg? I'd like to know if your results are
matching mine. (I
was going from upwards of 15 seconds to get to the spam/ham
pages to
under 6 now with roughly 1000 messages in the queue)

Solving site load issues with database replication is a lot
like
solving your own personal problems with heroin -- at first,
it sorta
works, but after a while things just get out of hand.

Unfortunately, the server tht I have it running on right now
is a wee bit
loaded to start with ... not enough disk I/O :(

Same here with the caches. We setup a new FreeBSD amd64
server here and
I thought the big increase in performance was the ability to
now read
all 6GB of memory in the server since i386 ignored over 4GB.
This
machine is smoking with Pgsql 8.3.

We also put this new machine on RAID-1+0 from RAID-5 and our
disk I/O is
a third what it was. Between all the improvements, this is
definitely
the way to go. Postfix queues even on servers accessing the
db from
remote networks are very low under 10. All this with SA
bayes.

Also, just as a comparison, I pulled up a cache of our
largest customer
of almost 50K spam and 7K ham (we keep 15/7 days
respectively), haven't
accessed the cache in weeks and came up in a couple of
seconds...I'm
going to bump up the caches to 30/15 now.
