Not really a direct answer either, but FWIW we use nagios
(http://www.nagios.org)
to monitor running processes on our Maia boxes and
send us alerts when things go down. Specifically, we have
it configured to
monitor the amavis, clam, and postfix processes as well as
the size of the
postfix queue.
Tracking the queue size alerts us when the downstream server
stops accepting
mail for whatever reason, or in the rare instances where the
amavis process
was running but was rejecting connections. I suppose in a
real pinch we
could quickly reconfigure postfix to hand its mail directly
to the MTA when
that happens, but we've never been in a tight enough spot to
need to do
that.
